Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo

Maya Says: I really liked this book. There is a lot to get from this book, even though it is so short. It is about a girl who just moved to Florida with her dad. She doesn’t have any friends, until she meets a stray dog at a grocery store. She takes him home and names him Winn-Dixie, after the grocery store that she found him in. Winn-Dixie is not your normal dog, he smiles, does not like to be left alone, and helps Opal make friends. I really liked this book because it was funny, sad, and interesting all at the same time.

Mom Says: The best DiCamillo I’ve read! This is a good read-aloud. The voices are so distinct, the story is engaging and heartfelt without being overly sentimental. There are some hefty themes that are handled so well by DiCamillo and written so beautifully. From adult to second grader, we loved it!

For independent reading we recommend for grades 4th to 8th
