Bunnicula by James Howe

I avoided this book as a child because I thought it would be too scary– a bloodsucking rabbit? That’s all I needed, was to be scared of my pets! Over thirty years later, I finally read it and find out the reality is not scary at all–not even for my 2nd grader. The scariest thing about this was that the dog was fed chocolate cupcakes (we all know chocolate is bad for dogs, right??).
The narrator is the dog, Harold, and he is likable and the story is well-written, there just isn’t too much of one. The bunny is really at the periphery of the story and it’s mainly about the well-read cat trying to figure out what the deal with the new pet is.
But, it is a “classic”….
